INTRODUCTION

Strongman World Rankings uses a performance based ranking system. Over a season (01 Jan to 31 Dec) whenever an athlete finishes a competition, they will collect a performance score for that show. That performance score will be added to the athletes overall season score to create a rating, which is what they are ranked on. The higher the rating, the better they have performed this season.

PERFORMANCE SCORE VARIABLES

So what is used when calculating an athletes performance score for a show?

Total Score - The total amount of points the athlete was awarded at the end of a competition. The perfect indicator of well an athlete did!

Total Points Available - The total points available at a show is reflective of the field size (amount of competitors competing) and the amount of events they competed in.

Competition Quality - Higher quality competitions will invite a stronger calibre of athlete, and for certain shows where titles hold weight and a considerable prize pot athletes will be more inclined to compete as a better trained, more complete athlete. Therefore performances in higher quality competitions should be awarded a higher score to reflect competing against better versions of athletes. To achieve this, eligible shows are ranked and given a multiplier that is added to the performance score during calculation. In short, higher quality competition = more points. (Quality is the variable that will change more frequently).

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

What other considerations go into creating an athletes perfoamce score?

Underperforming and Overperforming - Athletes who score in the top half of a competition field will score a positive (+) performance score and athletes in the bottom half of a field will score a negative (-) performance score. This means that if an athlete under performs in a competition they will lose rating points and if an athlete performs well in a competition they will gain rating points.

Excelling - The spread of points is used in the algorithm to create the performance score. This was included to discourage coasting to a win. The further ahead a winner of a show is, the more points they will gain. The reverse of this is also true, the further away the last athlete is from the rest of the field, the more points they will lose.

Withdrawals - If an athlete withdraws from a competition they will not gain or lose any points. However they are still included in performance score calculations for the rest of the athletes in the competition Pre-withdrawal scores are used and 0 is used for post-withdrawal events.
